'Are you?' she asked directly.

'What do you think?' he enquired.

'If you had been, you wouldn't have married me.’ she said quietly. 'You told me very plainly why you married me ... to show Elise you didn't love her ... and you succeeded rather too well, it seems, since she's now jealous of me.'

'Jealous of you and Gaston.’ he corrected.

She looked at him straightly. 'Elise doesn't love Gaston, we both know that. So does Gaston.'

The grey eyes held her gaze. 'And Gaston has not been in love with Elise for a long time.’ he said quietly. 'Now, though, 1 think Gaston is falling in love again, Alex. So you will promise me to stay away from him.'
